Disruptor

One pulse, one system dark—disrupt the rhythm before they disrupt you.

The Disruptor is a mid-tier ion bolt weapon available to the Rebel faction in FTL: Faster Than Light. It fires a single, focused energy pulse at a target ship's systems, dealing moderate hull damage while simultaneously applying ion stun to the struck system. For a Rebel captain who has outgrown the humble Ion Bolt but hasn't yet secured a high-tier beam, the Disruptor fills the gap as a reliable, single-target disruption tool.

Its defining trait is the ion component: every hit carries a chance to knock the targeted system offline for a set duration, forcing the enemy to reroute power or sit idle while their shields, weapons, or engines go dark. In a firefight where the opposing ship is bristling with overlapping beams, a well-timed Disruptor shot into their weapon array can be the difference between a clean escape and a hull breach.

Lore & Background

Rebel engineers salvaged the Disruptor's design from a damaged AAI freighter during the early weeks of the uprising. The original AAI version was a naval-grade ion lance meant to disable enemy capital-ship reactors at range; the Rebel workshop stripped it down, shortened the charge time, and repurposed it as a ship-to-ship bolt. The resulting weapon is cruder than its corporate ancestor but far more affordable for a freedom fighter's budget.

In Rebel doctrine the Disruptor is a 'system tax.' Rather than trying to out-damage a superior hull, a Rebel captain uses the Disruptor to peel away the enemy's operational layers one by one: stun the shields, then the weapons, then the engines. Each ion hit buys a few seconds of breathing room, and a skilled pilot strings those seconds into a full disengagement. The weapon's modest hull damage is a deliberate trade-off; the real payload is the silence that falls over the target's bridge when a system's lights go out.

Pilot crews in the outer sectors have a folk saying: 'You don't kill a ship with a Disruptor. You make it forget how to be a ship.' It's not quite true—no single bolt does that—but the cumulative effect of repeated ion hits, each one forcing the enemy to scramble power back online, is close enough to feel like it.

In Their Own Story

The AAI frigate's shields flickered, held, flickered again. Kael watched the targeting reticle lock onto their weapon array and felt the familiar cold prickle of a charge building in the Disruptor's capacitor. One shot. That was all he had before the frigate's own beams would sweep his position.

He let go of the trigger.

The bolt crossed the gap in a stuttering blue-white line, and the frigate's weapon lights went out. Not dimmed—out. The hum of their array died, and for three heartbeats the only sound in the void was the soft tick of his own reactor.

Kael didn't celebrate. He rerouted the Disruptor's target to their shields and fired again, then again at the engines. By the time the frigate's crew had finished rerouting power and their weapons roared back to life, his ship was already three sectors behind them, engines singing, hull intact.

He logged the engagement in the ship's journal, two words: 'They blinked.'

Reader's Guide

The Disruptor is a single-target bolt weapon that fires one ion-laced pulse at a chosen system. Each hit deals moderate hull damage and applies an ion stun to the targeted system, knocking it offline for a short duration. The range is mid-tier, placing it comfortably in the middle of the firing arc—close enough to hit most enemy ships without requiring you to push into their primary weapon envelope.

Tactically, the Disruptor shines as a disruption tool rather than a kill shot. Prioritise the enemy's weapons or shields first: stunning their guns removes the incoming damage for a full volley cycle, while stunning shields leaves them exposed to your other weapons. If you're facing a multi-weapon ship, rotating the Disruptor between their gun arrays keeps at least one system dark at all times.

Because it is a single bolt, it does not benefit from the sustained DPS of a beam, but it is cheap in energy per shot and easy to weave into a rotation with your other weapons. Pair it with a hull-damage beam or a multi-target spread to capitalise on the windows of vulnerability the ion stun creates. Against shield-heavy ships, lead with the Disruptor to crack the shield system offline, then follow up with your heaviest hitter while the shield is down.

The Disruptor is exclusively a Rebel weapon and is not fielded by any enemy faction in the base game. It appears in the Rebel weapon shop during the mid-game and is a natural upgrade path from the Ion Bolt for captains who want more punch and a stronger stun component.
