Drone
One crew, one laser, and barely enough shields to call it a ship.
The Drone is one of the most basic and frequently encountered enemy ships in FTL: Faster Than Light. A small, single-crew Rebel vessel, it represents the lowest tier of organized resistance against the Aeon and serves as a gentle introduction to the game's combat loop for new pilots. Its minimal armament and thin shields make it a near-trivial fight, but it still demands a moment of tactical attention in the opening sectors of your journey.
Though it carries no narrative weight of its own, the Drone functions as a narrative anchor: it is the first face of the Rebellion most players meet, a reminder that the scattered, under-equipped fighters you will eventually rally are not all dreadnoughts and capital ships. Many veterans recall their very first victory over a Drone with a fondness that belies its simplicity.

Lore & Background
In the fractured aftermath of the Aeon's dominion, the Rebellion is not a unified navy but a patchwork of salvaged hulls, borrowed engines, and whatever weapons a desperate crew can wire together. The Drone epitomizes this scrappy ethos: a single-pilot craft, likely repurposed from a civilian or Aeon-surplus frame, carrying just enough weaponry to make a statement and just enough shielding to survive the crossing between systems. There is no second crew member to tend the reactor, no dedicated engineer to patch a breached bulkhead. If the laser misfires or the shield generator flickers, the pilot is on their own.
These lone drones patrol the outer sectors, intercepting Aeon patrol vessels or simply trying to survive long enough to reach a Rebel outpost. They are the foot-soldiers of a war they will never see the end of, and their losses are never mourned in any formal registry. To the Aeon, they are rounding errors. To the Rebellion, they are the vanguard—small, expendable, and essential.
For the player, the Drone occupies a unique emotional space. It is the first enemy that does not feel like a scripted tutorial; it is a real, if fragile, opponent with a pilot who has a name, a fear, and a reason to fire back. Beating it, even with a single well-placed shot, establishes the rhythm of FTL's combat: manage shields, watch the weapon cooldown, and press the advantage before the enemy recovers.
In Their Own Story
The proximity alarm chirps once, twice, then falls silent. On the main display, a small shape peels out of the nebula's violet haze—a Drone, its single engine trailing a thin blue line. The pilot inside is alone. You can see the lone figure in the cockpit, hands white-knuckled on the yoke, eyes tracking your ship's approach with the particular terror of someone who knows their shields will not hold.
Your weapon systems hum. One laser. That is all the Drone carries. It fires, the bolt streaking past your port shield with a faint shimmer, and the shield generator whines as it absorbs the impact. You line up a return shot. The bolt connects. The Drone's shields collapse in a brief blue flash, and the hull shudders, a small vent of atmosphere escaping into the void.
The pilot does not fire again. The screen flickers, and the ship is gone—drifting, dark, a small tumbling silhouette against the stars. You collect the scrap. Somewhere, a Rebel supply officer ticks a box on a manifest and moves on to the next name on the list.
Reader's Guide
The Drone is an early-game single-ship encounter, typically appearing in sectors 1 through 3 of a standard playthrough. It is not part of any multi-ship wave and does not appear during Aeon strike sequences or near the Rebel base.
Trigger: Random encounter in early sectors. The Drone is one of the most common early encounters and may appear multiple times in a single run, though it becomes less frequent as you progress.
Choices: Standard combat or flee. There is no dialogue, no boarding option, and no negotiation. You either fight or disengage.
Fight outcome: The Drone has 10 shields and a single basic laser. With any functional weapon, it is destroyed in one or two volleys. You gain a small amount of scrap (typically 2–4) and may recruit the lone crew member, who will join your ship with a random role. The Drone's engine and reactor are minimal and yield no useful upgrades.
Flee outcome: You simply move on. No penalty, no reward. The Drone does not pursue.
Tactical note: Because the Drone's laser has a short range and slow cooldown, you can often win by keeping distance and letting it fire into empty space before returning a single shot. It is a useful early test of your shield management and weapon timing without risking a crew member.
The Drone does not appear in mid-game pressure encounters, Aeon strike waves, or the final approach to the Rebel base. It is strictly an early-sector phenomenon.
Did You Know?
- The Drone is one of the few encounters in FTL that is guaranteed to have only a single crew member, making it a reliable (if modest) source of an early-game recruit.
- Despite its name suggesting a mindless machine, the Drone is piloted by a living crew member in FTL's lore, not an automated unit.
- The Drone's single laser has a notably slow cooldown, meaning it can often be outranged and outmaneuvered by any ship with a speed of 4 or higher.
- In the FTL universe, the Drone is not a unique ship class but rather a generic designation for small Rebel interceptors, implying hundreds of identical hulls scattered across the galaxy.
