Mantis (fighter)
Small, fast, and never alone—the Mantis Fighter stings before you can blink.
The Mantis Fighter is a small, angular attack craft fielded by the Mantis hive-mind in service of the Aeon. It is one of the most frequently encountered enemy vessels in Faster Than Light, appearing from the earliest sectors through the final approach to the Rebel base. Though individually modest in firepower and shielding, Mantis Fighters are fast, aggressive, and often arrive in pairs or as part of a larger strike, making them a persistent low-level threat that tests a captain's ability to manage multiple targets and keep crew alive.
As the smallest Mantis warship in the fleet, the Fighter serves as the bread-and-butter skirmisher of the Aeon's war effort. It lacks the heavy weapons of a Frigate or the brute force of a Destroyer, but its speed and tendency to swarm make it deceptively dangerous, especially when a player's shields are already strained from a prior engagement.

Lore & Background
The Mantis are a hive-mind species whose collective consciousness is bound to the Aeon, the enigmatic force that drives the galaxy's most powerful war machine. Individual Mantis have no personal identity; they are extensions of a single will, and their ships are built accordingly—angular, insectile, and optimized for coordinated aggression rather than individual heroics. The Mantis Fighter embodies this philosophy: it is a disposable blade in a much larger scythe, designed to be launched in numbers, to trade speed for armor, and to be replaced without a second thought when it is destroyed.
In the broader context of the Aeon's campaign, Mantis Fighters are the lowest rung of a vast military hierarchy that includes Frigates, Destroyers, Carriers, and Dreadnoughts. Yet their ubiquity makes them the enemy most captains will face first and most often. A lone Mantis Fighter in Sector 1 is a manageable skirmish; the same ship appearing as the third vessel in an Aeon strike wave, with the Aeon's dreadnought looming behind it, is a very different proposition. The Mantis do not negotiate, do not surrender, and do not grieve their losses. They simply close the distance and fire.
For the Rebel resistance, the Mantis Fighters represent the face of an enemy that cannot be reasoned with. They are the first thing a young pilot sees when the Aeon's fleet drops out of warp, and they are the last thing a dying captain remembers as the cockpit fills with smoke. In the FTL universe, the Mantis Fighter is less a ship and more a symptom: the galaxy is being consumed, and these small, fast, indifferent blades are the first teeth of the jaw.
In Their Own Story
The proximity alarm screamed for the third time in as many minutes. Kael yanked the helm hard to starboard, watching the Mantis Fighter peel off from the larger ship's hull with the mechanical grace of a wasp leaving its nest. Its engines flared a sickly amber, and it was already closing.
"Shields at sixty percent," Ryn muttered from the weapons station, fingers dancing over the targeting array. "And it's not the only one."
Kael saw the second one then—a shadow detaching from behind the Mantis Carrier's prow, angling in from the opposite vector. Two. Maybe three. The Carrier's hull bristled with more shapes, patient, waiting.
"Focus fire on the first one," Kael said, more to steady their own breathing than to give an order. "If we lose the shields, we lose the fight."
The first Mantis Fighter's lasers stitched across their port shield, the blue glow flickering and dimming. Ryn's return fire punched through its armor in two salvos. The small ship tumbled, venting sparks, and went dark.
The second one was already behind them.
Kael's hands shook. The Aeon was out there, somewhere beyond the stars, and it had sent these little blades to test whether the Rebels were worth the effort of a real fleet. The answer, Kael decided, would be yes. It always was.
Reader's Guide
Early-Game Encounters (Sectors 1–3) A single Mantis Fighter or a pair can appear in standard Mantis encounters. The fight is straightforward: focus fire to destroy one, then the other. Watch for their rapid laser volleys that can chip shields quickly. No crew or items are gained; the reward is a small amount of credits and the experience of a clean kill. Fleeing is possible but the Mantis will pursue briefly before disengaging.
Mid-Game Pressure (Sectors 4–6) Mantis Fighters increasingly appear alongside larger Mantis ships or as launches from a Mantis Carrier. In a Carrier encounter, the Carrier will periodically deploy Fighters into the battle, forcing you to juggle multiple small targets while the larger ship's weapons pressure your shields. Prioritizing the Carrier to stop the stream of Fighters is usually the better strategy. If you destroy the Carrier, the already-launched Fighters must still be dealt with.
Aeon Strike Waves Mantis Fighters are a common component of Aeon strike fleets. They arrive alongside Aeon ships and Mantis Frigates or Destroyers. The key mechanic: you may choose to fight the entire wave or attempt to flee. Fleeing triggers the Aeon's pursuit, adding a persistent threat to your sector. Fighting means managing multiple ships simultaneously—Mantis Fighters will focus-fire on your exposed shields while larger ships apply sustained damage. Crew loss is a real risk here; a single misdirected laser can kill a crew member. There is no negotiation option.
Final Approach to the Rebel Base In the last sector before the Rebel base, Mantis Fighters can appear in mixed encounters or as part of a final Aeon wave. At this point, your ship should be well-armed, but the Fighters' speed and the possibility of a Carrier launching more make them a reminder that the Aeon's reach is still active. Defeating them grants no special items but clears the path to the base. If you arrive at the Rebel base with a damaged hull, the Mantis Fighters you just fought were the last obstacle before the story's climax.

- Mantis Fighters are among the first enemy ships most players face, making them the de facto tutorial encounter for managing shields, targeting, and multi-ship combat in FTL.
- In a Mantis Carrier encounter, the Carrier will continue to launch Fighters even after you have destroyed several, meaning the fight can escalate in length if you focus on the small ships first rather than the source.
- The Mantis race is a hive-mind; individual Mantis crew members have no names, personal goals, or dialogue. They simply exist to serve the Aeon's will, a detail that reinforces the game's theme of an indifferent, galaxy-c
