FTL Faster Than Light Codexery

Rebel Battleship

A warship that answers to no one but the Rebellion, and it is coming for you.

The Rebel Battleship is one of the most imposing encounters in FTL: Faster Than Light, representing the full military might of the Rebel Alliance pressing through the sector. It is a massive warship bristling with heavy weaponry and crewed by a full complement of officers, and it serves as a major story-driven test of the player's vessel and crew.

Rather than a random encounter, the Battleship is woven into the campaign's narrative arc, appearing as the Rebel cause escalates. Players who reach it face a choice that shapes the tone of the remainder of their run: engage in a punishing dogfight or attempt to talk their way past a warship that has seen far more combat than a lone courier.

Lore & Background

The Rebel Alliance did not win its early battles with speed alone; it won them with ships like this one. The Battleship is a mobile fortress, a statement that the Rebellion is no longer a ragtag collection of smugglers and defectors. Its hull is layered with armor, its weapon mounts are heavy enough to crack a frigate's shields in a single volley, and its bridge is staffed by officers who have been fighting the Empire for years.

In the broader narrative of the sector, the appearance of a full battleship signals that the Rebellion has consolidated enough resources to field capital assets. It is not a lone patrol or a desperate raid; it is a deliberate projection of force. The fact that it approaches the player's vessel rather than simply passing by suggests that the Rebellion has identified the player's ship as either a threat to be neutralized or a potential asset to be recruited.

For the player, the encounter is a narrative hinge. The Battleship forces a decision: do you stand against the tide of the Rebellion, or do you acknowledge that the war has moved beyond the scale of a single ship? Either choice carries weight, and the game remembers your stance as the campaign tightens toward the Rebel base.

In Their Own Story

The proximity alarm shrieked for the first time in hours. On the forward scanner, a shape resolved from the void—not a fighter, not a frigate, but a long, angular silhouette trailing twin engine plumes the color of dying embers. The Battleship. Its hull bristled with weapon turrets, each one a slow, deliberate threat. The crew looked up from their stations, and for a moment the only sound was the hum of the reactor.

A comm channel opened without a handshake. A voice—calm, clipped, tired—spoke. Not a threat. An invitation. "Identify yourself. State your purpose. The Alliance does not fire on those who mean no harm."

The pilot's hand hovered over the weapons controls. The engineer stared at the shield readout, already calculating how many hits the hull could take. The captain said nothing. The silence stretched. Outside, the Battleship held its course, patient as a mountain, waiting to see what kind of ship this was and what kind of crew it carried.

Reader's Guide

Trigger: The Rebel Battleship appears as a story-driven encounter during the mid-to-late phase of the campaign, typically after several sector events have progressed. It is not a random encounter; it is tied to narrative progression and the escalation of the Rebel military presence.

Upon detection, the player is presented with two primary choices: Fight or Talk.

If you choose Fight, the Battleship engages with multiple heavy weapons and a full crew of officers managing shields, weapons, and systems. It is one of the more demanding combats in the game, designed to test your ship's weapon damage, shield capacity, and crew efficiency. Victory yields a substantial reward in credits and possibly a system upgrade. Defeat ends the run.

If you choose Talk, you enter a dialogue sequence with the ship's commander. The conversation provides narrative context about the Rebellion's position and may offer a secondary choice: engage in combat or part ways. Choosing to leave means no combat, no reward, but also no risk. Choosing to fight after talking leads to the same combat as the direct Fight option.

The encounter does not grant or remove crew members. Rewards for victory are credits and a potential ship upgrade. The encounter is a one-time event; the Battleship does not reappear in the same run.
