Armada
One ship falls, another rises—there is no breather in the Armada's cold advance.
The Armada is a late-game fleet engagement encounter in FTL: Faster Than Light, presenting the player with a coordinated strike of multiple enemy vessels rather than a single ship. It stands as one of the more punishing encounters in the game's roster, demanding that the player manage hull integrity, shield cycles, and crew stamina across a gauntlet of sequential fights before the sector clear can be achieved.
Encountered as one of the three random encounter options in the later sectors of the galaxy, the Armada represents the kind of organized military pressure that the Rebel cause ultimately faces from the Aeon and its allied fleets. Choosing to engage it is a commitment to a prolonged, multi-phase battle with no respite between individual ship engagements.

Lore & Background
In the broader narrative of FTL, the Armada represents the Aeon's capacity for coordinated fleet operations. Where earlier encounters in sectors one through three tend to pit the player against isolated scouts, fighters, or lone destroyers, the Armada signals a shift: the Aeon is no longer probing the galaxy with single probes but is marshaling its forces into concentrated strikes. The fleet composition typically mixes a larger, heavily armed capital-class vessel with supporting craft, creating a layered threat that tests every system on the player's ship.
The sequential nature of the fight—defeating one vessel only to have the next close the distance—mirrors the relentless, wave-like pressure described throughout the game's narrative. There is no repair window, no chance to vent a damaged reactor or let a crewmate catch their breath. The Armada is, in narrative terms, a statement of intent: the Aeon's patience has run out, and it is bringing the full weight of its fleet to bear.
For players, the Armada sits in the upper tier of difficulty alongside the Rebel Base and later Aeon strike waves. It rewards preparation—upgraded weapons, efficient shields, and a crew that has been kept fed and rested—while punishing any ship that has been running on fumes since sector three.
In Their Own Story
The proximity alarm screamed for the fourth time in as many minutes. The pilot's hands were steady, but the sweat on the console told a different story. On the forward display, the first ship had just broken apart into a tumbling cloud of debris and venting coolant, and already the next silhouette was peeling out from behind it, weapons charging with that familiar blue-white glow.
"Hull at forty percent," the engineer called from the back, voice flat with exhaustion. "I can patch the port plating if you give me two minutes."
"I don't have two minutes."
The guns answered before the words finished. The bridge shuddered, a panel sparking and raining orange embers across the floor. Somewhere aft, a crewmate groaned and slumped against a bulkhead, and the medic was already moving. The pilot lined up the next target, fingers finding the firing solution by muscle memory, and thought: *three more. Three more after this one.* The Armada did not negotiate. It simply kept coming, ship after ship, a slow tide of metal and fire pressing in from every vector on the display, and the only answer was to keep the guns hot and the shields up and pray the reactor held one more cycle.
Reader's Guide
The Armada appears as one of three encounter choices in sectors 4 and 5. Selecting it commits you to a sequential multi-ship fight: you must destroy each vessel in the fleet one at a time before the encounter concludes.
Typical composition includes a larger, heavily armed ship (often a Destroyer or similar capital-class vessel) supported by two to three smaller craft. The larger ship will carry more weapons and tougher shields, while the smaller ships can swarm with rapid-fire weapons or launch fighters. You will not face them all simultaneously; each ships closes to range, you fight it down, and the next one advances.
There is no mid-fight respite. Hull damage, shield degradation, and crew fatigue carry over between engagements. A ship that enters the Armada at 20% hull with a tired crew is in serious trouble.
Strategy: Prioritize taking down the largest ship first if its weapons are the most threatening, or eliminate the smaller craft to reduce incoming fire volume. Keep a repair crew member ready. If you have a shield upgrade, ensure it is active before the first ship closes. Weapons with high beam or missile damage help shorten individual engagements.
The Armada is not mandatory—you can choose a different encounter from the three options—but it is the most punishing of the standard late-game choices and will test your ship's overall readiness more than any single-ship fight in the game.
Did You Know?
- The Armada is one of the few encounters where you cannot simply win a single fight and walk away; the victory condition requires eliminating every ship in the fleet before the encounter is resolved.
- Because damage and crew status persist between the individual ship fights within the Armada, a player who enters with a full crew and 100% hull will feel dramatically different from one who has been running low since sec
- The Armada's presence in the encounter pool shifts the strategic calculus of the later sectors: players often try to build up weapons and shields in sectors 3–4 specifically to be ready for fleet engagements like this on
- Unlike the Rebel Base, which is a fixed, narratively significant encounter, the Armada is a random encounter—meaning a player could theoretically never see it in a given playthrough if the RNG never presents it as one of
