Aeon Battleship

One ship, one weapon, and enough hull to make your crew question every life choice.

The Aeon Battleship is one of the most formidable single-ship combat encounters in FTL: Faster Than Light. A massive capital-class warship of the Aeon, it looms at the end of a corridor of space with its broad angular hull, layered shielding, and a devastating heavy weapon array. For a Rebel pilot already battered by the campaign, it represents a near-suicidal gauntlet: outlast its firepower, strip its shields, and break through its hull before your own reactor gives out.

In the broader narrative of the game, the Aeon are an ancient, seemingly immortal species waging an interstellar war of conquest. The Battleship is a physical manifestation of that campaign's military arm — not a lone raider or scout, but a true warship built to crush resistance. Surviving it is a rite of passage that separates a pilot who merely fled from one who fought back.

Lore & Background

The Aeon do not send fleets where a single capital ship will do. Their technology, far older than the species they now wage war against, allows them to build warships of staggering scale and durability. The Battleship class is the apex of that doctrine: a vessel whose hull is thick enough to shrug off sustained fire, whose shields regenerate with a patience that feels almost biological, and whose primary weapon delivers a single, devastating blast that can cripple a Rebel ship in one shot if the timing is wrong.

In the game's lore, the Aeon are portrayed as a civilization that has existed for an incomprehensible span of time, their motivations opaque and their patience inexhaustible. They do not negotiate, do not retreat, and do not show mercy. The Battleship is an extension of that philosophy — a statement that the Aeon will not be rushed, will not be outmaneuvered, and will grind down any opposition through sheer, relentless firepower. For the Rebel cause, which is often represented by a single ship and a handful of desperate crew, meeting one is a test of whether the resistance has the will to keep fighting.

Fans often describe the Aeon Battleship as the encounter that defines a run. The ship before it may have been a routine skirmish; the ship after it is either a legend or a memory. Its design in the game's distinctive angular, geometric art style makes it instantly recognizable — a broad, layered silhouette that reads as 'capital ship' the moment it drops into your targeting scope.

In Their Own Story

The proximity alarm shrieks for the third time in two minutes, and the comms officer's voice cracks on the other end of the channel. "It's… it's a Battleship. Ma'am, it's a goddamn Battleship."

You stare at the tactical display. The silhouette is enormous, its hull a lattice of angular plates that catch the distant starlight. A single heavy weapon turret sits forward, and you can see the faint glow of its charging cycle even at this range. The shields shimmer — a deep, pulsing blue that swallows your own weapon fire like water into sand.

"All hands to stations," you say, and your voice is steadier than you feel. The engineer is already rerouting power. The weapons officer is counting seconds between the enemy's shots, marking the rhythm. "We don't have to outgun it. We just have to outlast it."

The first blast hits. The deck plates buckle. Someone screams. And then, slowly, the shield reading on the enemy's display begins to tick downward. One point. Two. The Aeon does not retreat. It never retreats. But for the first time in a very long time, it is bleeding.

Reader's Guide

The Aeon Battleship is a single-ship combat encounter. You do not board it, scan it, or negotiate — you fight it in open space until one ship's hull reaches zero.

Trigger: The encounter appears as a standard combat node on the sector map, most commonly in the Aeon sector but also possible in other sectors depending on the run. It is not guaranteed to appear; you may skip it entirely and never see it.

Combat: The Battleship has a very large hull, strong active shields, a high-output reactor, and a heavy primary weapon that fires on a slow but devastating cycle. It may also carry secondary weapons. Your goal is to strip its shields, then chip down its hull, while managing your own damage, oxygen, and power distribution.

Key survival tips: Keep your shields topped up and be ready to reroute power to shields the moment its heavy weapon fires. Watch its reactor output — if it spikes, a big shot is coming. Prioritise its shields before focusing on hull. Keep your weapons officer focused and your engineer cycling damaged systems.

Outcome: If you destroy the Battleship, you receive a combat reward (typically a weapon, item, or resource drop). If your ship is destroyed, the run ends — game over.

There are no dialogue choices, no boarding, and no crew gained or lost from the encounter itself beyond normal combat casualties.
