Powered by the reactor and allocated through the ship's power grid, shields absorb incoming damage before any harm reaches the hull, and—critically—they regenerate over time once the immediate threat has passed. This regeneration cycle is what makes FTL's combat rhythm feel like a dance of attrition rather than a single catastrophic exchange.
From the battered rebel skiffs that dart through the outer systems to the Aeon's impenetrable barrier at the galactic core, shields define the tactical identity of every ship. A vessel with robust shields can trade blows and recover; one with meager shielding must dodge, overheat, or risk a single lucky hit ending the fight. For the player, managing shield power, timing regeneration windows, and deciding when to drop shields to free up reactor output for weapons or engines is one of the most consequential micro-decisions in the game.

Lore & Background
In the decades following the Aeon's emergence from the galactic core, shield technology became the single most contested piece of engineering in the known systems. The Aeon's own barrier—nearly impervious to conventional weaponry—set a benchmark that no rebel or government faction could match. What the Aeon achieved through sheer, incomprehensible power, smaller ships approximated through clever reactor design and careful power allocation. The result is a universe where a ship's shield rating is as defining as its hull: a 25-point barrier on a light scout feels like a prayer, while the Aeon's shield reads less like a defense and more like a statement of intent.
The regeneration cycle is perhaps the most philosophically interesting aspect of FTL shield design. Then the field snapped back, the reactor humming its low, tired song, and the numbers crept upward. Twelve. Seventeen. Twenty-three.
"Power's holding," said the engineer, voice flat, eyes on the allocation board. "But if I pull shields to zero, I can get the beams to full burn. Two seconds of regeneration, maybe three. After that we're hull and prayer."
Elara watched the frigate's weapon charges cycle. She had three seconds. Maybe four.
"Hold the shields," she said. "We dodge the next one."

The rebel strategy against it is not to out-shield or out-gun the Aeon, but to exploit the brief windows where its attention shifts, to strike with concentrated force before the field can absorb the blow. It is a war fought in the gaps between regeneration cycles, in the seconds where the blue glow falters and the void presses in.
