The Rebel Medic
While you shoot, they stitch. While you rage, they keep your crew breathing.
The Rebel Medic is one of the three default crew members aboard your ship at the start of a standard FTL: Faster Than Light run, alongside the Rebel Captain and the Rebel Engineer. As the ship's sole dedicated medical specialist, the Medic's primary function is to tend to wounded crew in the Medical Bay, restoring them to full health so they can continue operating critical systems during the chaos of combat. Without a functional Medic, injuries become a ticking clock that can cripple your ability to fight.
In the broader narrative of the game, the Medic represents the rebellion's commitment to its own people. While the Aeon Hegemony treats its drones as expendable components, the Rebel faction fights with a small, irreplaceable crew whose lives matter. The Medic embodies that ethos: every stitch, every biogel application, every moment spent pulling a teammate back from the brink is a small act of defiance against a regime that sees individuals as disposable.

Lore & Background
The Rebel Medic is a green-skinned alien whose face is often set in a calm, focused expression even as explosions rock the hull around them. In the quiet moments between engagements, they can be seen in the Medical Bay, running diagnostics, restocking supplies, and quietly checking on the Captain and Engineer as though making sure the small family of this ship is still whole. In FTL's world, where the Aeon Hegemony has reduced entire species to mindless drones and the Rebel movement is a desperate, underfunded insurgency, the Medic's work is not merely practical. It is a statement that these people are worth saving.
During combat, the Medic becomes the ship's lifeline. When a beam blast turns a crewmate into a writhing, injured figure, it is the Medic who rushes to the Medical Bay and begins the slow, tense process of healing. The player must make a constant triage decision: do I send the Medic to heal, or do I need them at weapons, shields, or repair? Every second spent healing is a second the shields are unattended, the engines are idle, the hull breach is unsealed. The Medic's value is not just in the healing itself but in the strategic flexibility they grant the crew.
If the Medic is lost—killed by a plasma bolt, sucked into space by a hull breach, or left behind when a room is destroyed—the ship loses its only dedicated healer. Other crew members can still operate weapons, shields, engines, and repair, but they cannot heal. Injuries then become a permanent, compounding handicap that can slowly bleed the ship dry of operational capacity. Losing the Medic is one of the most gut-punching moments in a run, a reminder that this was a small crew of individuals, not an army.
In Their Own Story
The alarm had barely stopped shrieking when the Medic felt the deck tilt beneath their boots. Another hull breach on the port side—two more crew down, blood pooling in the low gravity. They didn't think. Couldn't. They simply walked, boots scraping against the cracked floor panels, past the sparking conduits and the acrid smell of burnt insulation, to the Medical Bay. The door hissed shut behind them. They set the first body on the table, already reaching for the biogel applicator, already murmuring something in a low, clicking language that the Captain would never learn to translate. Outside, the Aeon dreadnought's weapon array was charging again. The Medic didn't care. They had two more to save before the next volley, and they intended to have them standing by then. That was the job. That had always been the job.
Reader's Guide
Crew Roles & Systems In FTL, every crew member can operate Weapons, Shields, Engines, Oxygen (to restore O2 in a room), and Repair (to seal hull breaches). The Medic adds one critical unique function: healing injured crew in the Medical Bay. The Engineer and Captain do not have a separate unique system beyond these shared operations; their distinction is narrative and positional rather than mechanical.
Strengths & Weaknesses Under Fire The Medic's healing is slow and requires them to be in a functional Medical Bay. If the bay is damaged or the Medic is injured, healing halts. Injuries force the affected crew member to stop operating their current system, creating a cascading vulnerability: the more injured you have, the fewer hands are on the controls. The Medic is also a single point of failure—if they are lost, no one can heal.
Unique Interactions During certain events, the Medic may comment on the state of the crew or the rebellion. In the Aeon encounter, the Captain's dialogue shifts to a final, defiant tone. The Rebel Captain bookends the run as the player's avatar of resistance, while the Aeon Captain, encountered as the final boss, represents the cold, dehumanizing authority the rebellion fights. Their confrontation is the narrative climax of the entire game.
Did You Know?
- The Rebel Medic is one of only three crew members guaranteed to be aboard your ship at the start of a standard run, making their loss one of the most consequential early-game events.
- Unlike the Aeon's drone crews, Rebel crew members are unique individuals with distinct appearances and names, reinforcing the game's theme that the rebellion fights for people, not units.
- If the Medical Bay is destroyed or the Medic is lost to a hull breach, no other crew member can heal, turning injuries into a permanent, compounding penalty for the rest of the run.
- The Medic can be seen performing idle animations in the Medical Bay between combat encounters, reinforcing their role as the ship's caretaker in the quiet moments between battles.
