FTL Faster Than Light Codexery

Aeon Warship

A wall of Aeon fire that does not speak, does not yield, and does not stop.

The Aeon Warship is one of the most intimidating capital-class vessels the player can face in FTL: Faster Than Light. A massive, angular Aeon warcraft bristling with energy weapons, it represents the raw military might of the Aeon collective as they sweep through the galaxy to harvest and assimilate every crewed system they encounter. Unlike the smaller Aeon patrol craft that pepper the early sectors, the Warship is a dedicated combat platform designed to overwhelm and destroy.

Encountering one is a moment of genuine tension: the ship's hull is thick, its weapons are numerous and hard-hitting, and the Aeon AI behind it does not negotiate. Players must decide whether to stand and fight a battle that could end their run, or to burn their engines and flee into the dark between stars, leaving the Warship to continue its relentless advance toward the Rebel base.

Lore & Background

The Aeon collective does not build ships the way organic civilizations do. Their vessels are grown and assembled in vast orbital foundries, each one a perfect instrument of a single purpose: the systematic elimination of every crewed system in the galaxy. The Warship is the collective's answer to the question of what happens when a target resists. It is larger than a standard Aeon destroyer, more heavily armed, and built to project force across an entire sector. Its angular hull plating and clustered energy emitters give it a brutal, almost insectoid silhouette against the starfield.

Within the Aeon hierarchy, the Warship occupies a role analogous to a heavy battleship in a human navy. It is not the apex predator—that distinction belongs to the Mothership that ultimately leads the final assault—but it is the workhorse of the Aeon advance, the ship that clears a sector of resistance before the larger operations begin. Its weapons are not aimed with malice; they are aimed with the cold, mathematical certainty of an algorithm that has already calculated the outcome and found it acceptable.

For the crews of the Rebel fleet, the Warship is a reminder of what they are fighting. It does not broadcast demands. It does not offer terms. It simply arrives, locks on, and fires. The only negotiation it recognizes is the one written in hull integrity and reactor output.

In Their Own Story

The proximity alarm screamed for the third time, and the captain's hands went still on the console. On the long-range scanner, the shape was unmistakable: too large to be a patrol craft, too angular to be anything organic. The Warship. It hung in the void like a blade drawn slowly from a sheath, its weapon arrays already cycling through charge sequences with a faint, pulsing glow that painted the nearby asteroid field in shades of cold blue.

The ship's engineer looked up from the reactor readout. "We can take one hit. Maybe two, if we're lucky with the shields." The weapons specialist said nothing. She was already calculating firing solutions, her jaw tight, her eyes fixed on the targeting display where the Aeon emitters blinked in slow, patient rhythm.

The captain exhaled. "All hands to stations. Shields forward, weapons free. If we're going to die, we're going to die making them spend a cycle on us." The engines roared to life, and the small, stubborn ship turned to face the Warship's full, terrible width.

Reader's Guide

The Aeon Warship appears as a combat encounter in the mid-to-late game, typically after the player has traversed several sectors and begun to feel the Aeon advance closing in. It is not a dialogue encounter; there is no negotiation, no crew interaction, and no branching conversation. The moment the encounter resolves, the player is presented with two options: fight or flee.

Fighting the Warship is a serious commitment. The ship carries multiple energy weapons that fire in rapid succession, and its hull is substantially thicker than standard Aeon patrol craft. Players who engage it will find their shields cycling hard and their hull taking repeated hits. The Aeon weapons do not miss, and the ship's AI allocates fire efficiently. A well-prepared crew with upgraded shields, a functional repair system, and a decent weapons array can survive the exchange, but it is one of the more punishing fights in the game. Losing the battle means the end of the run.

Fleeing is always available and carries no penalty beyond the lost opportunity. The Warship will not pursue across sector boundaries. Choosing to flee is a valid tactical decision, especially if the player's ship is still low on upgrades or crew members are injured.

The Warship does not offer crew, items, or resources as a reward for victory. Its value to the player is purely in the experience of surviving a high-pressure Aeon engagement and the narrative weight of having stood against the collective's advance. In the final approach to the Rebel base, the pressure of Aeon encounters like this one escalates, culminating in the Mothership assault, making the Warship a meaningful rehearsal for the campaign's climax.
