FTL Faster Than Light Codexery

SiLo

They don't dodge your shot. They simply make sure it never lands.

SiLo is a faction in FTL: Faster Than Light, a space combat roguelike developed by Amygdala Children. They are a shield-obsessed civilization whose entire military doctrine revolves around energy management and layered defensive capabilities. Where other factions throw raw firepower at you, SiLo captains simply refuse to be hit, wrapping their vessels in thick, regenerating energy barriers and outlasting opponents through sheer endurance.

In the game's campaign, SiLo ships appear as enemy encounters on the galaxy map and can also be piloted by the player. Their presence adds a distinct tactical flavor: battles against them test your ability to punch through layered shields before their energy reserves let them recover, while flying a SiLo ship rewards a more patient, energy-conscious playstyle.

Lore & Background

SiLo civilization has long regarded the shield as the highest expression of a species' will to survive. Their shipyards produce vessels with thick, layered hull plating and energy conduits that feed directly into barrier generators. Where the Lanius see war as a single decisive blow and the Mantis see it as a swarm, SiLo see it as a test of endurance: who can keep their lights on the longest?

Their carriers are particularly noteworthy. Rather than relying on a single devastating broadside, a SiLo Carrier projects a defensive perimeter and deploys escort drones to harass and distract incoming attackers. The carrier itself sits behind its own shields, slowly regenerating while its small craft pick off the enemy's weapons crews. It is a patient, layered form of warfare that punishes impatience.

In the broader galactic community depicted in FTL, SiLo occupy a middle ground: not the militaristic aggressors of the Lanius, not the chaotic raiders of the Mantis, but a proud, insular people who prefer to keep their borders sealed behind thick barriers. When the Rebel uprising tears through the galaxy, SiLo find their carefully maintained energy grids strained, their shield batteries taxed, and their doctrine of patience tested by enemies who simply refuse to stop firing.

In Their Own Story

The SiLo Medium *Vael's Persistence* hung in the void above a dying star, its twin shield emitters humming at a low, steady thrum. Captain Orenn watched the Lanius raider close in, its missile bays glowing hot. She did not return fire. She simply let the first volley strike her forward barrier, watched the energy ripple outward in concentric rings of pale cyan light, and let the shields drink it in. The raider fired again. And again. Each hit cost it a missile slot; each miss cost it nothing but time. Orenn's crew kept the reactor steady, the conduits cool. On the sixth volley, the raider's bays were empty. Orenn finally unmasked her weapons array. One shot. The raider broke apart in a quiet shower of sparks, and the *Vael's Persistence* turned its bow back toward home, shields still bright, still whole, still waiting.

Reader's Guide

Visual identity: SiLo ships feature rounded, almost organic hull shapes with layered plating and visible energy conduits running along their flanks. Their color palette is dominated by teal, cyan, and muted green, with glowing shield emitters that pulse in soft blue-white. Compared to the angular Lanius or the insectoid Mantis, SiLo hulls feel grown rather than built.

Ship roster: The SiLo lineup includes a Light (small, nimble, shield-boosted), a Medium (balanced with strong barriers), a Heavy (large, heavily shielded, slower), and a Carrier (large, deploys escort drones, sits behind its own shield perimeter). Each class prioritizes shield capacity and energy management over raw weapon damage.

Signature loadouts: SiLo ships typically carry a mix of medium-damage weapons paired with their standout shield generators. Their unique strength is not a single exotic weapon but the ability to regenerate and boost shields between volleys, effectively gaining 'extra health' that other factions cannot match.

Combat AI quirks: SiLo captains play defensively. They tend to keep their shields up, manage energy carefully, and avoid reckless all-in attacks. Carrier drones harass your weapons and engine rooms while the parent ship regenerates. Expect longer, grinding battles where your energy management is tested as much as your aim.

Galaxy map: SiLo encounters appear with their distinctive teal-toned icon. They are a mid-to-late game enemy and can also be selected as your starting faction, giving you a shield-heavy, energy-conscious playstyle from the jump.

Narrative role: SiLo represent the 'endurance' philosophy in the galactic community. During the Rebel uprising, their shield-heavy doctrine is tested by enemies who simply refuse to stop pressing the attack, forcing SiLo captains to adapt beyond pure defense.
