FTL Faster Than Light Codexery

Mantis

A thousand chitinous eyes converge, and the swarm does not negotiate.

The Mantis are a hive-minded, insectoid alien species that serve as the primary antagonistic force in FTL: Faster Than Light. Their angular, chitinous ships—painted in olive green with sharp red sensor arrays—sweep through the galaxy in coordinated swarms, driven by a collective will that treats individual vessels as expendable components of a larger organism. They are the enemy the player must ultimately defeat, culminating in the confrontation with the Mantis Mothership.

Introduced as the game's default hostile faction in the 2012 release, the Mantis gained a playable identity with the Alike expansion, allowing players to command their own hive and experience the swarm tactics from the other side of the cockpit. Their design philosophy centers on numbers, relentless aggression, and a willingness to detonate their own hulls to deny the enemy a clean kill.

Lore & Background

The Mantis do not think in the way organic, individualistic species do. Their cognition is distributed across the hive, each ship a neuron in a vast neural network that prioritizes the survival of the collective above any single unit. This is why a Mantis vessel, sensing its own imminent destruction, will毫不犹豫 trigger its self-destruct sequence—sacrificing itself to shred the enemy's shields and hull in a final, desperate burst of plasma and shrapnel. To a Mantis, that is not suicide; it is the most logical tactical decision available.

Their ships bear the aesthetic of a living organism: segmented hulls, compound-eye sensor clusters, and jointed weapon arms that fold and extend like insect limbs. The green-and-red palette evokes both the iridescent carapace of an insect and the warning coloration of a venomous creature. Even their smaller fighters carry multiple independent weapon systems, reflecting the hive principle that redundancy and volume of fire outweigh the precision of a single heavy gun.

In the broader FTL narrative, the Mantis represent the cold, alien 'other' against which the player's crew—fleeing the galactic crisis—must fight to survive. They are not motivated by ideology or politics; they are a force of nature, a predator that has identified the player's ship as prey and will not stop until the swarm or the prey is gone. The Rebel uprising storyline frames the Mantis as the dominant military power the player must ultimately break, and the Mothership stands as the apex of that hierarchy: a leviathan that commands the entire swarm and must be brought down in a final, desperate engagement.

In Their Own Story

The proximity alarm shrieks before the eyes register the shapes on the long-range scanner. Three. Five. Twelve Mantis fighters peeling off from a shadowed nebula, their red sensor-eyes blinking in unison like a field of fireflies. The helmsman's hands tremble over the controls. "They're swarming, Captain. All of them, same heading. Same speed." The captain grips the armrest. On the tactical display, the green icons close in a tightening spiral, each one a small, angular maw of beam and missile. There is no negotiation channel. There never is. The Mantis do not hail. They do not parley. They simply arrive, and the swarm folds around the ship like a jaw closing, and the first beam paints the port shield in a searing white line. The captain breathes out. "All hands, red alert. Let's see how many of them it takes to break us."

Reader's Guide

Visual Identity: Mantis ships are instantly recognizable by their olive-green segmented hulls, angular insectoid silhouettes, and clusters of red compound-eye sensors. Weapon arms look jointed, almost biological, and the overall aesthetic reads as 'living chitin' rather than machined metal.

Ship Roster: The full line runs from the Mantis Fighter (small, fast, swarm-oriented) through Scout, Destroyer, Cruiser, Battleship, and Dreadnought, culminating in the Mantis Mothership—the final-boss leviathan that commands the entire fleet. Each class scales in size and firepower while retaining the same green-and-red visual language.

Signature Weapons: Mantis loadouts favor beams, missiles, and lasers in combination, emphasizing volume of fire and multi-directional coverage. Smaller ships carry multiple independent weapon systems to overwhelm shields through sheer number of hits.

Combat AI Quirks: The defining Mantis behavior is the self-destruct. When a Mantis ship's hull drops to critical levels, it detonates, dealing a final burst of damage to the player. Expect swarms of small ships to converge on your position simultaneously, and expect them to die loudly. They do not retreat; they commit.

Galaxy Map: Mantis encounters appear as green icons. Multiple Mantis icons clustering together signal a swarm encounter—prepare for a multi-ship fight rather than a one-on-one.

Narrative Role: In the base game, the Mantis are the primary hostile force the player must defeat to reach the Mothership. In the Rebel uprising storyline, they represent the dominant alien military threat. In the Alike DLC, the player can command the hive themselves, experiencing the swarm tactics as an offensive tool.
